Since ancient times, Cortona used to be a strategic site thanks to its hillside position, from which you could see the underlying territory that stretches from Valdichiana to Trasimeno Lake. This in one of the reasons why in the 4th century B.C. the Etruscan built the wall that still encircle the city. As evidence of Etruscans time in the town of Cortona, there is the discovery in 1992 of a "Tabula Cortonensis", a bronze tablet with one of the longest inscriptions in the Etruscan language.
